In an electric dryer, this usually means the heating element has burned out or a thermal fuse has blown. In a gas dryer, it points to a faulty gas valve coil or a broken igniter. These are standard repairs. Note: If a thermal fuse blows, it is almost always caused by a clogged exhaust vent trapping heat inside the machine.
Stop using the dryer to prevent further damage. A loud squeaking or screeching sound is typically caused by worn-out drum rollers, a failing idler pulley, or dry drum glide bearings.
